E5: Do You Really Need to Be on Every Social Media Platform?
In this episode, we’re diving into one of the biggest time drains (and pressure points) for new business owners: social media. With so many platforms out there, it’s easy to feel like you should be everywhere...but we’re here to tell you: you absolutely don’t have to be.
We break down:
- Why being on all the platforms can actually slow your growth
- How to choose the right platform(s) for your business
- The importance of knowing your ideal client (and where they hang out)
- Why enjoying the platform you’re on really does matter
- The difference between “this feels new and scary” vs. “this just isn’t for me”
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, second-guessing your content, or constantly chasing consistency, this is the episode you need.
💡 Key Takeaway:
Pick the platforms that make sense for your business and your audience, then go all in on doing them well. You don’t need to be everywhere. You just need to be consistent where it counts.

Hello and welcome to Real Talk and a Slice of Cake with business besties, Emma and me Leanne. So today I want to talk about social media because it kind of can take over your whole life, let alone your whole business and what social media platforms. You should be on because Emma, there are a lot aren't there?
We've got TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, just to name, name a few there. And if we're trying to, what should I say, spread ourselves too thin. It can actually, it can, well it can definitely lead to, to burn out. And that fatigue of what the hell am I posting? Who am I posting it it for? So, um, I thought it would be useful today just to talk a little bit about.
Who, where we post and, and, and why we post. So what is your take on on this? I think that there is so many platforms out there that we could actually drive ourselves bonkers if we tried to be on them all. And I think we also don't have to assume that the more places you show up, the more likely you are gonna start making money, which is, you know, why you're in business.
Because I think. If you do that thing that you just spoke about, spreading yourself too thin, what you're gonna end up doing is doing lots of things, but not doing any of them very well. So my take is very much a case of if it's one, if it's two, if it's three, it doesn't matter, but pick your platforms and do a really good job of them.
Really make sure that you've got a platform working before you even consider using or focusing on another one. And I know we're gonna get into repurposing and all of that type of stuff 'cause there's lots of things you can do to, to give yourself a visibility. But in terms of focus, I would always say, and I do this myself, pick your platform or pick your couple of platforms and go hard on those ones before you worry about any of the others.
Do you agree? I, I do agree, Emma, and, uh, I think picking your platform isn't just a case of, oh, I'm gonna, I'm gonna choose this one, or I'm gonna choose that one for me. This is where it's so important to, to know who your ideal client is. So who, who is that dream client? Who is that person that, that you want to be working with, that's gonna, that's going to buy from you?
And we'll talk a lot about ideal clients in, in, in different episodes. But for today, that's why doing that ideal client work is, is so important. So getting to know who he or she is, how they consume. Information. So are they going to be scrolling TikTok reels or are they more of a, a Facebook person? And that, that work is, is is just so important.
So we we're very fond, aren't we? Of my Sally and Sophia. We know, we know, we, we know a lot about, about them. I've not mentioned them for ages, have I? But you haven't. So they're my, they're my ideal client personas. But, you know, I could tell you everything about Sally and, and Sophia. Um. So, yeah. What, what, what?
Have I missed anything there, Emma? I don't think you've missed anything, but I think there's also another consideration, which might sound a bit of a, I don't know, a conflict of interest or whatever fancy words we wanna use, but I think we also need to consider where you get your most enjoyment from. So if, if you absolutely detest it doesn't work for you, you, you know, it's not just a case of you aren't prepared to get uncomfortable to do something, I don't know, TikTok, then perhaps TikTok isn't the right place for you to be hanging out.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't be using it if that is where your absolute ideal clients are going to be. It's just about making sure that you've got a way of doing it without having to like fully endorse yourself in there. So I, I think, no, you haven't missed anything. You absolutely need to be where your ideal client, your dream client, are hanging out.
But I do think there also needs to be this element of making sure that you enjoy it, are happy to do it, are comfortable doing it because. You are not gonna be consistent if you absolutely hate showing up in a particular way. Um, so I, I think that's the only thing that I would add on the back there. No, that's good.
And I'm, I'm having a little giggle to myself here. I, I've, um, a view doing little dances on, on TikTok. I'm sure we can get you, um, doing those, everyone, everyone, uh, seems to like a, a dancey TikTok, but it's, it is in all seriousness, Emma, it is. Really important, isn't it? I think you, you wanna be coming across as your most authentic and, and, and natural and what people can relate to you.
Whereas if you are as stiff as a board, which, you know, somebody around here could be, that'll be me. Um, that doesn't particularly like the video. Um, then that's not going to attract the right kind of client. No, not at all. But there's a difference there, isn't there? Between not yet sitting comfortable doing something like video versus actually I hate this and I know I'm not gonna keep doing this.
And, you know, it just doesn't sit right with me. I can't see the point of this type stuff because I think when you start doing anything. For the first time, the second time, the 10th time, the 20th time, however long it takes. It is uncomfortable. And I remember my first ever live, holy moly. It was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life.
And it's like, why, why was it scary? And it's all this, isn't it? It's all, you can't see what this is. Can you? I'm on, if you're on audio, you can, if you watching YouTube, doing the Quey thing with my head, um, my brain was screwed because all I was thinking about was, well, what do I sound like? My accent. You know, I say rk, Leanne says B.
I'm not posh. Anne's posh, she's not. She just has a really nice accent in comparison to me. But I was, I was stigmatizing what that, what other people would think. What if I got my words wrong? What if I said the wrong thing? It was guaranteed I was going to, because that's me, that's how I roll. So it wasn't that I hated doing it, which is probably what I told people.
It was just because I wasn't yet comfortable with it. So there's a difference isn't there, between not yet being comfortable with it and actually, no, this just isn't for me, and it important to say that. No, and it's, it's a good point to raise actually, because I don't think anybody at what, some people will wake up and think, well, hey, I wanna go, I wanna start talking live on, on Instagram.
But, so I think let's just kind of round this, this one up a little bit. I think the, the, the key takeaways are that you really need to understand your ideal client, where they're gonna be hanging out, if that's the, the right word, how they consume information, um, and then finding a, so. Then you know what those, those platforms are.
Then finding the space that you've, you feel you, okay, it might be uncomfortable at first, but where you are going to definitely going to show up and you're gonna be consistent in that showing up. And um, yeah, as you said, might be that swan at first that looks calm and serene, but actually your legs are going under the water.
Um, but. You'll soon get to, um, to know. And I think that's why the importance of having that ideal client is so that you are talking to that one person. If you forget all the other people that might be watching, if you just think that you are talking to her or him, I do think that makes things a little bit easier.
Does, and also don't worry about Auntie Flo, uncle Sid, and all of those people, if they're watching your content, doesn't matter. Absolutely doesn't matter. And also remember with with, with content, putting your content out there and getting familiar on a process, it's just about getting started. You don't have to do it all in one go, even on one platform, you can start off with short written posts.
You can start off with mini videos, whatever sits right with you, and then just build that confidence up, but nail that platform before you start worrying about anything else. Is that everything you wanted to cover? Because I know social media is something that you love. Yeah. I think that's all for today's op episode.
So thank you for listening, and we'll be back soon.
